A recent initiative by the Ministry of Gozo has led to the identification of a walking route known as the Round Gozo Coastal Walk. This 50 km walk takes you around the entire island by a route that is as near to the coast as is practical. The route takes you past many of the most interesting, impressive and beautiful features of this exceptional island. It is not a uniform, signposted route but a combination of limestone and earthen paths, rural tracks, minor roads and coastal promenade. It leads you through a rich variety of landscapes, passing features of great historical, environmental and visual interest. While summers are hot, Gozo has a wonderful climate for walking from September to May. Spring with its abundance of wild flowers is particularly delightful.
The walk can be done by any reasonably fit person and is mostly along level paths, though there are a number of uphill sections. A pair of walking shoes or trainers is generally adequate. The route brings you near to the edges of cliffs and such sections are best avoided in windy and wet weather. Taking the above into account, this walking route is regarded as practical, safe, interesting and very enjoyable. As there is so much to see, examine and enjoy along the route it is recommended to foreign visitors that the walk be spread over a minimum of 4 days, with at least 5 nights spent on the island. To get full enjoyment from your trip you should stay at least a week on Gozo, allowing some days in between walks for relaxation.
Key Features along the route
- Stunning landscapes and sea views
- Coastal forts and High cliffs
- Sandy beaches and tranquil valleys
- Archaeological riches
- Wonderful plant diversity
- Traditional villages, cathedrals and churches
